Nelson herself has demonstrated since 1991 that the ASB contribute to a public sphere in which criticism of power was feasible even within the court itself. This new translation, which would not have been possible without her work, stands as a tribute to the career of this distinguished historian.

The theme of space, territory and frontiers has been the subject of considerable research in recent years. We present a map of the 870 Treaty of Meersen, informed by the latest studies (of M. Parisse, M. Gaillard and J. Schneider), rendering these findings more accessible to the public. 6/7

You will learn more about the quantity of text and personal names in the Annals, clearly illustrating the transformation brought about by Hincmar in the 860s. Additionally, the introduction includes reflections on the marginalia within the text from the years 833, 858, and 859 in mss. O and C. 4/7

While Nelson provided only a brief introduction, supplemented by articles, Levillain had previously produced a detailed scholarly introduction to the Grat edition, which remains difficult to access. We offer an extensive introduction that incorporates the scholarship of the past thirty years. 3/7

The ASB constitute a lengthy (334,000 char.) text, preserved in late mss. with partial or corrupted content. J. Nelson undertook a monumental task of annotation, which we have expanded (700 n.) in collaboration with specialists in Slavic and Scandinavian studies (T. Lienhard, L. Malbos). 2/7

La recherche française n'est pas totalement ruinée, visiblement – mais les ressources qui restent sont dépensées n'importe comment, par exemple comme ceci. Quand on pense aux coupes budgétaires dans toutes les facs, ça rend furieux.
