Hey, I have a question on this. I bought it for my sister and her family, but they've said they feel overwhelmed by the rules. Is it difficult for people who don't have a strong board game background, or does it just look daunting until you get into it?

I'd argue that point doesn't even make sense. I know of multiple games that have in game cheats, and they have a pop up that says "This will disable achievements". Arguing the 2 are mutually exclusive is just lazy development.
