Dismantling the prison industry and ending the exploitation of those it targets.
BREAKING! Predatory prison telecom giant Securus has bought out @broadbandbreakfast.bsky.social. They are now hosting a panel for the industry and have refused to include anyone advocating for incarcerated people. It's shameful paid propaganda parading as neutral media.

It’s time to unsubscribe.

ICE execs are comparing moving people to packages just like private prison execs once compared selling beds to hamburgers.

“We need to get better at treating this like a business, where mass deportation operation is like Amazon trying to get your Prime delivery within 24 hours."

We have more GOOD NEWS! Business ethics watchdogs in the UK and Switzerland accepted our complaints against Barclays, HSBC, and UBC for investing in private prisons. We're heading into mediation, which could be key to cutting off critical financing that enables their human rights abuses.

BREAKING HUGE WIN! 🚨 New York just announced that phone calls will soon be FREE in New York prisons, bringing around $13 million in relief annually to incarcerated people and their families. The new policy is expected to go into effect on August 1st. Spread the news!

BREAKING 🚨 In a move that protects financial interests and ignores the law and will of Congress, the FCC just delayed the implementation of new regulations that would lower prison and jail call rates by 2 years. The rules were set to save families over $500 million per year. Shameful.

REQUIRED READING out now from @fwd.us "People with an immediate family member in prison spend nearly $4,200 annually to support them—more than one-quarter (27%) of income for someone living at the federal poverty line." www.wecantaffordit.us

BREAKING! For years, we worked to drive prison telecom Securus (aka Aventiv) into bankruptcy. Well, this week, its owner, Platinum Equity, did it out of court, simply bowing out, waving the white flag, and handing it over to lenders after defaulting on $1.6Bn in debt. Stay tuned for what this means.

Too many have struggled to afford communication with their loved ones, forcing impossible decisions. And 87% of those carrying this burden are women, disproportionately women of color, like Martha Wright Reed, whose grandson was incarcerated.

The correctional telecom market is a $1.5 billion industry. All three of the largest prison telecom providers are owned by private equity firms.

Securus is owned by Platinum Equity, ViaPath by American Securities, and ICSolutions by HIG Capital.

Today we honor the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, a fierce advocate for justice, and we remember his words – a reminder that the fight for change is continuous and collective.

WOW. Prison healthcare firm Wellpath just got approval to borrow another $362Mn a month after it initiated bankruptcy proceedings.

Who would loan it money? An existing creditor who wants to move up the seniority ladder. Creditors at the bottom, like families with legal settlements, will suffer.

BREAKING! Do you remember the corp that pioneered the elimination and digitization of mail in prisons and jails: Smart Communications? Well, it just filed for bankruptcy.

Smart Comms is run by Jon Logan, who unapologetically took out PPP loans while owning a Rolls Royce and yacht named "Convict".
