This NPC from the Borealis Wood playset caught my attention from the start. The last two lines of her description—just… damn.

The PCs in this setting are hares. And if she’s not hungry enough to eat you, she’s an ancient mamma bear who will give you her hard-earned wisdom.

At the end of every session, you ask the players where they’ll be performing next. One time, my group told me Kanye West’s birthday party at the Cloud Gate in Chicago, and added that Anish Kapoor would be there.

All silliness aside, the writing in this game is excellent. This passage floored me:
Love For fairies: A few playbook plays say that you charm someone or, maybe, that someone falls in love with you. Take this to be the fleeting love of fairy glamourie, intense but not profound. True love must be given freely. It must be held loosely, and it can be revoked as freely as it was given. When a fairy gives their heart, it's forever until it's over. When it's over, it's over forever until it's not. Fairy love is swift as a shadow, short as a dream, brief as lightning. It's devoted and inconstant, jealous and forgiving, heavy in its lightness and serious in its vanity. Its course, famously, never did run smooth. Fairy law considers the heart to be the least reliable of organs. Promises made by the heart are the least binding of promises; favors done by the heart are the most like gifts; gifts given by the heart are the most like loans. For human beings: Same. Example: Everyone knows that Tip the Lantern Jack will fall in love with the River Queen, if only the River Queen will smile at her once and mean it. This, ultimately, happens. It happens at a time when there's a strain between the circus and the River Queen, as the circus hasn't respected her hospitality as fully as she’d hope and demand. "Her smile's genuine," the MC says, "it really is, but of course you already revealed to her that you'd fall in love with her if she smiled at you. If you think it's calculated, that's your call." “No," Tip says. "Or maybe. But even if it is calculated, if she wants me to fall in love with her, I want it too. I was right, she smiles at me and I fall in love with her." There are no rules for what this means or how it changes what happens next. What will come of it? Who knows!

Under Hollow Hills is one of my favorite TTRPGs. I ran a ten-session campaign during the pandemic over Discord that started with my players catching Satan’s attention in the first performance and ending with the circus performing for all of Hell’s assembled demons to hype them up before Armageddon.

Humanity has transcended death and scarcity, but still falls victim to factionalism, greed and prejudice. Military artificial superintelligences turn on us, leaving Earth an interdicted wasteland. Everyone is future-shocked and traumatized.

As a writer and a human being, I think about this passage from Peter Watts’ Blindsight quite a bit. It’s a bleak, depressing view of the species, but goddamn if there aren’t people out there who would approach first contact this way.
Excerpt from pp. 261 of Blindsight, by Peter Watts. The text reads: This is how you break down the wall: Start with two beings. They can be human if you like, but that's hardly a prerequisite. All that matters is that they know how to talk among themselves. Separate them. Let them see each other, let them speak. Perhaps a window between their cages. Perhaps an audio feed. Let them practice the art of conversation in their own chosen way. Hurt them. It may take a while to figure out how. Some may shrink from fire, others from toxic gas or liquid. Some creatures may be invulnerable to blowtorches and grenades, but shriek in terror at the threat of ultrasonic sound. You have to experiment; and when you discover just the right stimulus, the optimum balance between pain and injury, you must inflict it without the remorse. You leave them an escape hatch, of course. That's the very point of the exercise: give one of your subjects the means to end the pain, but give the other the information required to use it. To one you might present a single shape, while showing the other a whole selection. The pain will stop when the being with the menu chooses the item its partner has seen. So let the games begin. Watch your subjects squirm. If-when—they trip the off switch, you'll know at least some of the information they exchanged; and if you record everything that passed between them, you'll start to get some idea of how they exchanged it. When they solve one puzzle, give them a new one. Mix things up. Switch their roles. See how they do at circles versus squares. Try them out on factorials and Fibonaccis. Continue until Rosetta Stone results. This is how you communicate with a fellow intelligence: You hurt it, and keep on hurting it, until you can distinguish the speech from the screams.
