Remembering both Sophie and Sylvia Lancaster born on this day and reminding you of the excellent work @sophiecharity.bsky.social does in their memory

Released on this day 41 years ago; 'Treasure' is a favourite Cocteau Twins album of mine, in no small part due to the heavy use of the LinnDrum 'rock kit' patch which featured a sample of John Bonham's famous snare sound from 'When The Levee Breaks' #musicnerd #shoegaze #goth #indie #mybackhurts

Released on this day 39 years ago. How's your lower back?

Fields Of The Nephilim will soon be embarking on their UK tour, and I'll be seeing them this Saturday in Birmingham!

I won't ask who else is going to see them, but who's going to stand in the same room as them while they perform behind inpenetrably dense fog?

Released 35 years ago today...
I remember travelling down to Wembley to see them perform on their Vision Thing tour, that felt far too long ago.

Released on this day in 1983. It might have sounded like it was recorded in a cave but that was the sheer beauty of it. You know you're old when you can still taste the smoke machine in the back of your throat from the first time you heard this.

It's practically my duty to share this incredibly wholesome photo with you of @visionvideoband.bsky.social taken by Chris Cardi.

It's a snapshot of everything we wish the goth community to be. Have a great weekend! 🦇

It can't moo all the time.

Okay we're a day late mentioning this one but on 5th August 1988, Fields Of The Nephilim released their highly acclaimed 2nd album which featured the single 'Moonchild', achieving a #12 position in the UK album charts & maintaining sales of flour & cowboy hats for another year...

And a belated Happy Birthday to Dinah Cancer of the legendary 45 Grave who turned 65 yesterday

We would like to wish a happy 62nd birthday to Elizabeth Davidson Fraser, the legendary Cocteau Twins frontwoman whose uniquely beautiful voice captured hearts & ears and whose lyrics inspired some of the most secure WiFi passwords this planet has ever seen.

Remembering Sophie Lancaster, who died 18 years ago today. She was murdered for being a Goth.

Her legacy, The Sophie Lancaster Foundation, works to Stamp Out Prejudice, Hatred & Intolerance Everywhere. Honour her memory by standing against hate. #SophieLancaster #Sophie #goth #gothic

Happy birthday to Banshees/Creatures drummer Budgie, arguably the greatest drummer alive. If you haven't read his recent autobiography 'The Absence' I strongly urge you to do so, it's fantastic.

On this day in 1979, Bauhaus unleashed the definitive goth DJ toilet-break record 'Bela Lugosi’s Dead' onto the unsuspecting populus.
For some reason it's harder to acquire the standard 12" black vinyl version than the picture disc with glow in the dark text.

Happy 68th birthday to Daniel Ash of Bauhaus / Tones on Tail / Love and Rockets 🦇

Released on this day, 1988. I loved this single so much, pretty sure I turned my 12" copy into thin strands of black plastic.

We've been asked to give a birthday shout out to Pete from Northampton who's a big fan of the goth scene.
He's 68 today but he doesn't look a day over 25, does he?

COCTEAU TWINS-GARLANDS
Released 43 years ago (yesterday). With its dystopian wall of screaming guitars & Liz Frazer's haunted vocals, it's still the most gothic sounding album ever made in my humble opinion & a staunch favourite in my entire music collection.

What's your go-to 'gothest ever' album?

FYI: a very slight World Goth Day website update for 2026 which will take place next week...
May 22, 2025 at 3:18 PM
Lots & lots of World Goth Day posts and photos on here, Threads and Facebook, it's a really beautiful thing to see.

Not so many on X of course because, ya know... 😬

Let's raise a full glass to very silly ideas gone global, everyone!

40 years old today;
Love and Rockets released 'Ball Of Confusion', a sheer stomper of a tune by The Temptations, and only slightly bettered by the rendition of the song in 'Sister Act' in 1993.

Orrrr not.
