However the over-the-top antics of Maximum Overdrive, killer trucks preceding alien invasion seems right at home!
@stephenking may have been high during the production but he was right on in how the story worked in print versus on screen.

One viewing of the 1997 made for TV version of the short story Trucks which tried to play it straight like the original story and you can see how it just doesn’t work.
As a short story in its own, straight is fine. But on film, your brain won’t resonate with what’s happening.
