As a fan of his D-beat side projects as well, I’m spinning this rager today and thinking about this legend, the rough journey ahead of him, and hoping he beats the living shit out of his illness.

When People Grow, People Go should be considered a HC classic in more circles by now.

Others might recall the lyrics of vocalist George Hirsch, which nested in the suffocating dark thoughts of the human psyche, like a tortured poet minus the glam of mainstream appeal.

Nonetheless, it’s been ten years since their fourth and final record.

They might be remembered for deviating too much from the familiar sonic aesthetics of the genre, where some of their songs sounded more akin to the Melvins or the early Subpop releases.

They also introduced (or reintroduced) some to ambient and the hypnotizing soundscapes of Tangerine Dream. On which side were you on?

If it didn’t make a bigger splash in 2017, it’s possibly due to the style being a product of its time – it certainly did not disappoint the old heads who were holding their breaths.

I can’t help but think of BANE when I hear Chaka Malik’s unique vocals, which imho are better suited in Burn than his other more mainstream post-hardcore band Orange 8mm.

This is the same melodic HC one would expect from Burn.

The bottom line is that if experimental sludge metal is your thing, well OMG doesn’t miss.

To add to the confusion, I’ve now realized that the tracks on Darkness are lighter than those Light. Ultimately, Seminar VIII is my personal favourite OMG release in the last decade. It’s maybe the last recording feat. bassist Caleb (Cave In/Zozobra), who tragically died in 2018.

Not to rest on their laurels, the sludge lords gave us two more. This album, which was officially announced, actually came out after Seminar IX: Darkness of Being, a surprise drop just a couple of months earlier.

Same here! Way ahead of their time. We’ve seen its influence on acts like Godflesh to newer ones like Health, but none really comes close to this album’s level.

This album in particular used to be consumed in a claustrophobic-inducing basement room, which I personally think elevates the listening experience.
