We all assumed the takbir, standing straight as we faced what we believed was Mecca, preparing to enter the state of prayer. ‘NO STANDING!’ We raised our hands just above our shoulders and made our offering to Allah. ‘Allahu Akbar!’ we called out together, as if we were one. ‘SHUT THE FUCK UP! Marwa decided to pray in the safest place she could find – her mind. She began with the first takbir – conjured through her thoughts – and signalled the commencement of each prayer during her enforced disappearance. She would recite the fatiha (the first chapter of the Qur’an), bow, prostate, recite tashahhud in her mind out of sight from the interrogators and guards. When she was finally sent to her cell in the evening after long periods of interrogation, it would be the only time she would feel safe to pray two rak’ats and would collapse in tears. Being kept in the dark on the passing of time, he [Mohamedou] managed to glimpse the watch of a guard that informed him of both the date and time, and crucially, that it was a Friday. Having already figured out how to tell day from night due to the guard shifts, he developed a method of counting the days through the Qur’an, by reciting ten pages in a day, allowing him to know that every sixty days he would finish and thus keep a track of the months as they were passing. As the system shifts to find new ways to be violent, Muslims pivot, secure in the knowledge of God’s ultimate mercy.

Sahar Aziz explains, ‘Western countries considered terrorism a form of psychopathology that violated universal norms. In turn, terrorists were characterized as evil, irrational, pathological, and fundamentally different from the United States and its state allies whose violence was morally justified.’ Aziz points out that the Palestinian terrorist trope, particularly in the 1970s, was a significant precursor to the idea of the criminalised identity of the ‘Muslim terrorist’ as an allusive force of ideological violence.

Close relations between the US and Egypt since Camp David in 1978 and the pumping of billions of dollars of military aid effectively placed Egypt in the position of an extension of the US carceral state – whereas Algeria felt no need to take any such position, resulting in its own nationals being sent to Guantánamo Bay. Detention by the US authorities thus became less about crime and punishment, and became more a form of filtering through the US’s geopolitical relations with other nations and a hierarchy of citizenship.

They challenged the lawfulness of punishing them for their religious beliefs with such measures as solitary confinement and loss of good time. In many of these cases, the state used the Ahmadiyya Movement in Islam (AMI) to undermine these claims, offering prisoners only English translations of the Quran and correspondence with Ahmadi religious leaders. An early precursor to the contemporary ‘good Muslim/bad Muslim’ dichotomy in the United States … The framework that was used to target civil rights activists and those identified as ‘Black nationalists’ was re-purposed in counterterrorism efforts in order to present Muslims as being a special threat. The well-established practice of solitary confinement was taken to a completely different level of repression, as Supermax facilities were re-engineered to include Communications Management Units (CMUs) that restrict, manage and monitor all of a prisoner’s external communications. The CMUs have been used on 213 individuals; all but two of whom are Muslim.
