Escaping reality one page at a time. So many books to read, so many ideas to (maybe) write.

AI slop not posted here, not welcome here. AI has no place in the creative human world so there's some crossover.

But just books and the people who write them.

This local Wolfdog joined an Olympic ski event and triggered the finish-line camera. This is Nazgul. He snuck into a cross-country skiing sprint this morning and raced the homestretch with some competitors before being escorted home. 14/10 someone get him a medal

Doomscrolled just long enough. Found a warm & fuzzy profile of Nazgul. Enough news for today.

Very good dog invades course but falls short of medal glory at Winter Olympics

The figure skaters I think have been cheated by the judges are almost always the ones who skate to music I like.

Worried you might fall six times? Skate to k.d. lang singing 'Hallelujah' (as one example of many) and I'll spot you an extra ten points.

Denmark is leading USA 2-1 in mens' hockey at the Olympics.

Team USA all the way, of course. I am proud to be an American.

But for absolutely not geopolitical reasons*, I think it would be just fine if Denmark won too.

I can't decide if the little drones chasing everyone down their runs at the Olympics are useful, hilarious, or creepy.

Possibly all three.

Choosing my fighter...

Accuweather says I should expect 'flurries to an inch' (75% chance of 1-3 inches, Weather Channel say 3-5 inches for daytime & 3-5 for nighttime, Weather Underground says 8.5, NWS says 9.8 inches.

C'mon, @accuweather.com, you got this!

Read just enough weather news (I'm on the edge Winter Storm Fern's predictions & deeply hoping the 'massive Arctic high pressure system' stays put over me to keep it away) to discover that Lake Erie is 90-99% frozen which means no more lake effect snow for me.

Double bonus of Arctic temperatures.

To write a thriller from four different perspectives, each in first person, and have them all be unique and clear - and lend them all an air of mystery that holds steady through the entire story, is no easy feat. But Darby Kane has done it in Such a Clever Girl. I don't know if it's meant to be a little ironic, that title choice, but it seems like it is since Stella, Marni, Hanna, and Aubrey all are wrapped up in the absolutely conviction that the other three are too clever for their own good and are hiding deep, dark secrets about what happened that day fifteen years ago.

The women who are featured in this book are probably deserving of their own books, and no doubt some have been the subject of their own biographies and histories. Obviously some of the women existed in a time when records were not as well-kept and it would not be easy to tell their stories without a lot of filler and supposition.

This new forced feeding of AI slop by Google via Gemini giving overviews of my gmail account & offering to 'help' me write emails is beyond infuriating.

Anybody know how to turn it off entirely?

There I was, looking out the window to see if it snowed as much as predicted. I saw blue skies, melty patches on sidewalks, little bits of grass. Lovely.

Then I was confused because I don't have the window I was looking out.

Reader, it was a dream.

Dreams, at least that one, do not come true.

I saw a dandelion, two spiders, a wasp & a small V of geese flying north the other day.

Obviously far too early for any of that.

But I knew the tease of spring-esque things would make the return of winter suck all the more.

I was right.

I still have cable (no questions, please) and there's a channel called "American Heroes" that has a featured primetime lineup tonight of...

Hitler's Zombie Army
The Nazi Jesus
Nazis vs. Aliens
Nazi Killer Magic

I... don't even know what to say. Wouldn't even if that weren't on the channel it's on.

Just saw a headline promising tips for better health & wellness in 2025. Unless it involves a portal to an alternate reality that's even a smidge less... insane, I'll be over here eating all the sugary, highly processed foods that make me happy because stressing about calories & exercise ain't it.

Might make a mildly belated New Year's Resolution to unsubscribe from one thing a day to declutter my inbox of all the stupid things I stupid signed up for and never open.

And a steady, unwavering resolution to never use, or patronize those who do, AI for any reason whatsoever if it can be helped.

Happy New Year! 🥳🍾🎉

2025 was a most excellent reading year for me, couldn't have asked for a better one. So if you're looking for something to read in 2026, all me to recommend the 10 best books I read this past year...

My New Year's week book challenge (if I don't lose power in the windstorm tomorrow) is to read Wicked. I have not seen the play or either movie.

My nephew tossed the book to me, told me it wasn't a present... he just needs me to read it & give it back if it's less weird than it was when he dnf'd.

This two-day windstorm in a 117 year old house is convincing me that Donnie Eichar's infrasound/wind vortices theory about why the hikers raced half-dressed into the snow & died at Dyatlov Pass (disorientation, paranoia, anxiety) might be true.

So many weird noises.

DEAD MOUNTAIN is the book, fyi.

Looking through old reading journal/bujo things & my biggest takeaways are that -

a) if I want to be sure to dnf a book (only to start it again later, and dnf again), all I need to do is write down the book I'm going to read

b) I waste a lot of paper writing down the things I'm going to do

I had never heard of her before I requested the chance to read THE SEA CAPTAIN'S WIFE based solely on a newly found interest in maritime history and having read a previous book by Tilar J.

Meagan Church's novel tackles an age-old problem - that women are expected to be something very particular, without faltering and without complaint. And that no one is more particular and more demanding of women than other women, or each woman herself.
