Not taking a break from Poetry, but taking a little break from posting here as I’m doing some traveling.
Write something awesome today!
(And if you can’t write something awesome, no worries—just write SOMETHING.)

Approach
20251124

They sense a form of winter
drawing near;
the air brings them
the bleakest news,
I fear.

They bow
and thin
and weaken—
dappled dun,
and seldom rouse,
not even for the sun.

Their tiny souls
reverberate—
mine resonates
their dread,
especially when
I ponder on
the empty days
ahead.

Train
20251120

A year is such a heavy thing—
not just the part
you wear about your neck,
but too the train that falls behind
and drags along
as you attempt to move.

Each step becomes a herculean task—
then comes the day
when you'd do anything
to cast the dreadful
cursèd thing
away.

Longsuffering
20251119

We too may love intensely
for a time,
but where love shows
its truest face
is in those long, dark,
waiting hours
and days
and lifetimes
when all other spirits
fade
and dry
and fall
away.

Lessons
20251118

We fell into the embers
of a fire that never burned
quite right,
and found a warmth around us
of a kind that didn't feel
quite right—
no worries, though,
we both can go,
pretending lessons
have been learned
tonight.

Those of you writing novels this month: Where do your characters get their names? People you know? Name generator? Names you’ve always liked?

I’m genuinely curious…

Severed
20251116

Some severed thought—
a half-born sense
allowed no light—
did try to warn me
of this night.

I did not give it
space to grow,
and that will ever
grieve me so.

If only I had
fed it well,
I’d have no tale
of woe to tell.

Failure
20251115

There’s comfort in failure.
A calm relief.
A voice that says,
“You see? It’s true;
you never should have tried.”

But some of us
would rather try
and fail
three hundred times—
and then again
three hundred more—
than let that lying voice
soothe us to sleep.

Days Like These
20251111

I told you
there'd be days like these—
dark days of pain
and mirth

and nights of fear
in misery
wracked with
the pangs of birth

without the sound
of mewling child
to ease
the troubled mind

but only aching
emptiness—
no respite,
till we find…

In Progress
20251111

Your dreams are always happening;
you join them in progress.

Have you ever known a dream
to have a beginning?
Or an end?

You enter
and depart
while they play on—

and who can say
what mysteries we miss
while we're awake?

Eight Minutes
20251031

You have eight minutes.
What will you write about?

The dark chocolate and marzipan
you just ate?

The chill in the air?

Smiles
beneath undulations
of dark walnut…

The hand that slipped
into yours
when you didn't expect it…

The longest of empty days
and days
between…

Chocolate
20251031

Chocolates
taste more like
wax and plastic
every year
and less
and less
like chocolate.

I’m sure they think
that we don’t notice
as they degrade it
little by little.

Fools…

Resist. Expose. Shame them.
Demand better.

Content
20251029

I’m content—
is that a bad thing to be?

Should I be striving for something?
Unsatisfied? Thirsty? Obsessed?
Burning with ambition?

What’s wrong with
just sitting quietly
and appreciating
how everything
fits together
right now?

Aardvark of Dusk
20251029

The aardvark of dusk
creeps sluggishly in
with nary a sign
of where he has been.

He pays us no mind
as he settles in place—
no mood or intent
can be read on his face.

October Ends
20221031

October ends
before it seems begun,
and in the dark of morning
all is soft.

October rains
have come and gone
and left an air
of winter here.

It settles in
to every crack
and corner
that it finds.

It owns this place
and all of us—
but only
for a time.

Break Free
20251015

The secret truth
of childhood’s end
is that there's no such thing.

The reality is
that we’re all children
all our lives—
most of us pretending
to be grown,
while so few see things
as they really are.

Break free
of the framework
that was never really there.

Egg
20251015

Just enjoyed
a hard-boiled egg
over the kitchen sink—
which is the best way
to have one, I think.

(Unless, of course,
you could pull one
out of your coat pocket
in Victorian London.)

Cold
20251009

"What a cold and a rainy day…"
she said.
"Where on earth is the sun hid away?"
she asked.

"Nowhere on earth,"
I said,
"or that would be the end of all
in a deadly, searing fireball!"

She hasn't spoken to me since.

Flood
20251008

I dreamed of a flood—

I'm sure it must have had
some deep, foreboding meaning…

You were there…

We weren't afraid
or bothered by it much.

Thick brown water
crept closer
and closer
to where we were shopping—
but we just went up
some wooden stairs
and shopped on a higher floor.
