Yesterday I took the Green Line out to Oak Park and then walked up to Riis Park in Belmont Cragin on the Northwest Side. The bird sanctuary up there is a real treat!

...I might have an answer. Long story short, it's language attitudes: people have been drawn to EO since its inception because learning the language is how you enter its community.
EO is inextricable from its internationalist philosophy, and this has driven its speakers to keep it alive.
