Which one of Rosemary Sutcliff's should I choose? 'Knight's Fee'? 'Warrior Scarlet'? 'Eagle of the Ninth'? When my back's to the wall, I choose 'The Lantern Bearers'. Aquila suffers so much, learns so much, and the book is so finely wrought. His last message to his sister makes me cry every time!
