So if you liked some kinds of men and you were young and wanted to meet up, you didn't go to 'gay' bars, because who wants to deal with all that rejection and judging? You went to the 'leather' bars... which also in the early 1990s became accepting of bears. 4/

It's because a significant portion of the gay culture at one time decided to aggressively and narrowly define a gay ideal by basing it on interests and body type, and explicitly excluded others for being too chubby, too kinky, or gawd forbid be over thirty with a lot of body fur.
