Continuous stream of thousands of Manx shearwaters heading west past St Govans Head this afternoon, headed back to the 450,000ish breeding burrows on @skokholmisland.bsky.social & @skomerisland.bsky.social Bonus points for spotting the kittiwake! #seabirds #ornithology

.@uniofglos #seabird lab are flying off to Portugal today for #CoimbraSeabirds conference. Sadly I can’t make it this time, so this is my vibe today…!

Have a great week everyone, and look out for our work on procellariiforms, kittiwakes and puffins

How do we count seabirds that hide away in burrows underground? Sing to them, and listen for who sings back!

Great to be on @BBCSpringwatch, talking #Puffins with the excellent @MeganMcCubbin!

Banning the fishing of sandeels (i.e. puffin food) is superb news for UK #seabirds

On at 38m 30s…

They say the best thing about @skomer_island is the view of @SkokholmIsland… or is that the other way round? Who could choose…?

Plenty of fish around for #puffins, but maybe kittiwakes can't reach them. The impacts of rapid #globalheating will be complex, so it's crucial to continue, develop (and fund!) our UK #longterm #seabird studies to conserve our internationally-important #seabirds
November 16, 2024 at 9:59 AM
This matches @uniofglos #MSc research by the awesome @animal__alice with @seabird_watch: high temps (and strong westerly winds) = kittiwake nest failure in 2019. Is extreme heat the problem in 2023? 3/4
November 16, 2024 at 9:51 AM
These sea cliffs contains hundreds of nests... but many birds have failed to lay eggs, or abandoned eggs during incubation. Why?
Kittwakes nesting on shadier, damper areas of cliff are fine... but those most exposed to the unusually hot & sunny weather have ALL failed 2/4
November 16, 2024 at 9:43 AM
Is the #marine #heatwave in the NE Atlantic impacting #seabirds? These temperatures are literally off the charts. I'm just back from kittiwake fieldwork on @skomerisland and I'm concerned👇 1/4 #ornithology #climatecrisis #globalheating #SST

Temperatures are rising for Welsh #seabirds 🌡️ 🐦 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

On @skomer_island high temp 🥵 and rainfall ☔️ is bad for breeding success 🐣 in some species, more science needed 🧐 to understand impacts of a hotter, rainier & windier future

Although there are tens of thousands of guillemots breeding in #Pembrokeshire, sadly not all of them make it through weather like #StormNoah. This unringed adult was washed up at Nolton Haven opposite @skomer_island #seabirds #ornithology

You’ll join a thriving team of postgrads and researchers in ecology at @uniofglos, on a project in collaboration with @RSPBScience and @Ellingbry with supervisors who’ll support you to thrive too. DM or email me for enquiries and more project info. 4/4 End

Are young puffins moving from declining to booming colonies? We’ll use #puffarazzi images from @RSPBScience to assess the age of puffins… older birds have more grooves on their bills. Groovy project! 2/4

🐧 What’s that you say…? An #MSc studying #Puffins? To find out why @skomer_island’s population is booming while others are declining? Just like Sir Dave said on #WildIsles??? About time too! 🐧

Roses are red,

Violets are blue,

Puffins are awesome,

But I can’t really tweet because I’m on strike to protect working conditions!

What can seabirders do? A lot!
Supporting #seabirds in *any* way helps them through #HPAI. Volunteer for surveys, engage with farming, lead studies of other threats, and of course join @TheSeabirdGroup!
8/9
November 16, 2024 at 11:35 AM
3. Integrated approach needed
#HPAI (and other infectious diseases) should be prioritzied alongside other threats e.g. #fisheries #ClimateCrisis #pollution #offshorewind
Continued testing crucial, to monitor the unpredictable future of HPAI, and persistence of virus
7/9
November 16, 2024 at 11:28 AM
2. Limiting virus spread.
Biosecurity measures need to be proportionate. Monitoring effects in seabird contexts will allow modification of measures (e.g. blanket bans) designed for commercial poultry industry
Should carcasses be removed? Clarity needed...
6/9
November 16, 2024 at 11:20 AM
1c. Improve understanding of #HPAI.
How does #movementecology affect transmission? How does population structure and mixing and different breeding stages contribute? Seabirders need to continue their studies, where possible, to answer these questions
