It's a very good cookbook!

...and it has just been a vacant lot ever since. Would have made for a nice condo conversion project.

The only truly responsible way to drink and ride!

Unfortunately nobody learned anything from the movie in the long term. Bohemian Rhapsody came out in 2018 and was basically every single cliche in one film.

People continue to underestimate how incompetent the Trump Admin is capable of being.

I’m suddenly reminded of “Flashback” by Dan Simmons which I read years ago; it’s about a dystopian future America where everything has been just awful since “it hit the fan” (a line the author uses repeatedly) and then at the end he reveals that what he meant was Obama being elected president.

I’m pretty sure there are more recent editions of this which are reasonably priced.

Done right, it can be very impressive. It's just gross to see it slathered all over a space that has long been used to project the sensibility of a republic, and not imperial majesty.

You can even buy genuine gold leaf on Amazon, it's not impossibly expensive. Gold spray paint doesn't have quite the same luster as the real thing.
This is a detail from a photo of the Oval Office- it's possible to see where the sheets of gold leaf were applied (uneven paint edge).

As for Trades- It's hard to judge from photos and video at a distance, but the tile seems to have been installed reasonably well inside and out (bad taste aside). Someone had to come in and apply the gilding. Fabrication of the signage, paintwork, and we know the name of the demolition company.

...the complete lack of understanding of how a Neoclassical/Federal building wants to be vs some kind of Baroque Russian palace... it's painful for me to watch. Taste is not impossible to learn, and here is a man who has not cultivated any real discernment in 79 years.

The White House... there is expensive Calacatta marble involved, the gilding is real... and that's about where the quality ends. The Home Depot epoxy resin appliques everywhere, the bizarre signage...

The Waldorf work cost $2b over 8 years and likely involved every trade conceivable. Plus the added dimension of documenting and restoring numerous original Art Deco components of the building and adapting them where necessary.

Could you elaborate?

So would this be a more cost-effective setup (assuming the bathrooms in a multi-family building are properly arranged) than the current US standard?

We all know what attracts them to Orban, and it’s not his economic track record.

I can think of at least one other home in SF which has undergone $20m+ in renovations over the last few years, but it’s over on Pacific Ave. I’m shocked that anyone would spend that amount on a house in St. Francis Wood.

Same story in just about any Bay Area city you could care to name. Same story across most of the country. It’s genuinely inspiring to see a plan like this, and I wish them the best.

It will be ready in two weeks, we just need to be patient!

This seems more efficient and effective than building a series of short disconnected sections of bike lane over the course of many decades.

"Has he said those exact words? Doesn't count unless he has said those exact words! Of course, if he did say those exact words, *obviously* he meant something less insane."

I maintain that including a light rail line between the new neighborhood and the Suisun Capital Corridor station would make this project a lot more sensible from a regional transport perspective. At least a bike trail? Anything at all besides "one more lane"?

The exterior is the original masonry structure, also with some modifications of course.

I don’t think anything excuses one temporary resident transforming the residence into a monument to his own ego and poor taste.

I'd bet most people don't have a strong opinion about the gilding in the Oval Office or the paving in the Rose Garden or who built the East Wing and when, etc. This is really just emblematic of the larger problem- our President has decided the rules don't apply to him and is doing whatever he wants.
