I’m Alex. I notice tiny little details; a leaf, a shadow, a plant acting up, and turn them into things meant to be used, loved, and lived with. Handmade, lived‑in, and slightly unhinged is the whole vibe here.
Letter L this week—six native leaves sharing the same space. All different, still working together just fine.

Letter K this week, so…knot garden. Not my favorite in the series, but it did scratch that old landscape‑architecture itch, tiny paths looping over and under, tidy and fussy at the same time. Sometimes the alphabet hands you a letter and you just make the most charming little square you can.

Joy Grows Wild”—Jerusalem artichokes popping up wherever they want, bright and happy, like they’re announcing themselves from the side of a well‑worn dusty road.

False Indigo this time. Posting my work still feels a little cringy, so I leaned into the name as it sounds like it’s apologizing for not being “real” enough. Pairing it with “Ask me about my impostor syndrome…” was my usual coping strategy: make a joke and hope the feelings get go away.

Back to the hackberry piece: I like rendered art with messy outlines (thanks, landscape architecture school!). But here the outlines flattened the bark illusion. My "style" didn’t serve the subject.
You all ever add that “one extra thing” you thought a piece needed, only to realize it lessened it?

Hackberry trees were my favorites as a kid. The bark snapped off to become buildings and mountains in my games. I tried to capture that memory here, but my insistence on heavy outlines flattened it out. Now off to find my Lego men!

Letter G in the Superset. I began with tessellations in mind, but the gaillardia pushed me to a mid‑century/glam wallpaper feel. Constraints are the best part of this series. It’s less about “choosing” and more about seeing what signal the antenna picks up.

Finally uploading my Letter E entry to the Alphabet Superset: a Czech folk art inspired Euphorbia mandala built from my personal collection and love for these weird, geometric plants.

Devil's Claw (Proboscidea louisianica)
Oklahoma native with a seed pod that's also a part time emotional support gremlin. Very happy, a little pokey, and way to enthusiastic. Remember, love isn't always elegant, it's often a little awkward. And sometimes a little scratchy.

For 11 months, they rest. For three weeks, they steal the show. My entry for B in the Alphabet Superset, celebrating Bulbs—the underground dreamers who store up everything they need until the perfect moment. A quiet rhythm I deeply respect.

So I am doing the Alphabet Superset, and as of posting this, I am working on Letter E. ...so here's letter A: A is for asymmetry, annuals & abandoning perfection. Hand-drawn, hand-lettered, and Oklahoma-grown—because perfect is boring.
