A Political critic of #Arcane
I wanted to wait a little before starting to criticize the show, since I loved it, but people are already on the train so I might as well jump in:

Do NOT take #Arcane 's political reflexion and some of its thematics as the most pertinent commentaries ever.

Now.. this is indeed quite a critic.

But it doesn't mean that you must stop enjoying the story. It's completely possible to love a story that is not perfect on politics, even for activists.

#Arcane is still a jewel of storytelling and animation even with its flaws.

But keep those points in minds.

And so.. I can understand when people are mad because resistants are depicted as dying in the suits of their oppressors without names and without much depth..
November 24, 2024 at 11:24 AM
And this is the biggest flaw of Arcane, it is depoliticizing in the sence that it renders the political question the matter of individuals favored or cursed by change and do not really question the systems in place or the powers in balance.

It's an idealist vision of change.

In reality, no matter the ennemy, fascists will use people they dominate as tools to wage wars.

To think that a democracy can rise from such a system is naive at best.
November 24, 2024 at 11:24 AM
Because we are talking about the rise of fascism here. A completely oppressive system that is suddenly brushed off by "the bigger oppressor" and the "common enemy" trope.

While this is cool in storytelling, is is once again depoliticizing.
November 24, 2024 at 11:24 AM
In Arcane, it is as easy as "making the good choice" for a fascist with moral struggles in power to suddenly turn toward her lover just because of a nice word and thus creating the condition for a rebellion.

But in reality, such a choice do not exist and especially not for people under oppression.
November 24, 2024 at 11:24 AM
But that's exactly the problem !

In reality we don't or rather, this choice is limited by the material conditions of our existences and society do not become more evil become some people decide to be evil but because of systems that push people to act consequences.
November 24, 2024 at 11:24 AM
In reality the big problem of Arcane is linked to all those problems.

The big problem comes with the biggest philosophical debate :

The notion of Change and the fact that because people change.. that society becomes good or evil.

As Jayce puts it "we should have a choice"...
November 24, 2024 at 11:24 AM
t feels like the problem here comes from scientists themselves or mad scientists..

While this can be true, in reality.. the problem with science comes from people who don't really have a lot of things to do with science, the lack of fundings, the problems of dissinformation..
November 24, 2024 at 11:24 AM
At the end, the irrational love for science must be destroyed with science, and no knowledge can be constructed from the remains, the knowledge disappear into oblivion and we end up with only death..

It's still amazingly looking. But it's not really the best, especially in our current context.

While it is normal, because science must be as reasonnable as possible, the counter demonstration is never really shown.

Only exist the Science as a tool of devotion or fast inventions.

In our current context, where science is demonized and laughed at, this is not the most pertinent commentary.
November 24, 2024 at 11:24 AM
Another critic I would make is the philosophical debate around science.

Science - once again - takes the bad place...

The seeking of fast progress and fast researches is antagonized.
November 24, 2024 at 11:24 AM
But again.. The representation is really not the worse at all.

There are very good things and a very good character arc coming from that.

I would just prefer not to have those type of character be the beacon of "irrationnal" destruction... for once..

The solution is not to show the flaws of people in those situations... but showing that two people with physical and mental problems are two of the main reasons for the major part of the destructions in a city or the potential end of the world is a bit much.
