We are the mental health specialists within the #VAWG sector, with unrivalled experience providing specialist (and free) mental health services for survivors of domestic abuse. www.womanstrust.org.uk
The government's upcoming #vawg strategy won't include childhood sex abuse - but over a quarter (28%) of women who can to us for support with domestic abuse-related mental health needs reported experiencing abuse as children. Fragmented policies do not support survivors.

It's National Bereaved Parents' Day and our hearts are with everyone who's ever lost a child. We're especially grateful for the support of women who've lost their daughters to domestic abuse-related suicide. We campaign in their name: womanstrust.org.uk/give-survivo... #GiveSurvivorsHope

There's been more attention on the mental health of domestic abuse survivors recently - but there's still nowhere near enough specialist support available. Get running and help us to #GiveSurvivorsHope and provide more of our counselling and therapy services. DM for deets

Women like Mia are the reason we and over 90 other #vawg and #mentalhealth organisations have written to the UK government asking them to finally recognise the long-overlooked impact of domestic abuse on survivors' mental health and fund specialist long-term counselling. #GiveSurvivorsHope

We understand how difficult and depressing it can be to read what feel like neverending stories about male violence against women and girls. But we want you to know that hope and support is out there - especially if you have experienced #vawg

🧵1/2 New ONS data shows in the last year alone

🟣 2 million people were victims/survivors of #DomesticAbuse

🟣1.5 million people experienced #stalking

🟣Around 1 million were sexually assaulted

Where is the specialist mental health support for these people?

#16Days More women who'd been in abusive relationships took their own lives than were murdered by a partner or ex-partner (data from National Police Chiefs Council).

Lack of access to mental healthcare for domestic abuse survivors is a major yet invisible killer of women.

We've also had to turn away hundreds of women like J. We just don't have the funds to support them. And sadly, we know the consequences for domestic abuse survivors that don't get the mental health support they need - it's a secondary and largely invisible killer of women.

This is what we do at Woman's Trust. We provide a safe, non-judgemental space for women to tell us what has happened to them and how it has affected them. Then we work with them to pinpoint the trauma, stresses and behaviours so they can improve their emotional wellbeing and their lives.

J was referred to us by a world-renowned clinic after they recognised her symptoms and diagnosed her with complex #PTSD. Working with our specialists we were able to help J with her psychological #trauma and #mentalhealth so she could get back to being herself.

(#TW suicide) As we know, too many people in abusive relationships experience depression and their thoughts turn to suicide. The National Police Chiefs Council reported that more #DomesticAbuse related deaths were from people taking their own lives than from murder by a partner or ex. #NoExcuse

Alienation and isolation are two of the most common, non-physical elements of domestic abuse. It doesn't always happen overnight, but it can leave people in abusive relationships feeling like they have no one to turn to for help when they are at their most vulnerable. #vawg

We're incredibly proud of our work and the impact we have had on so many women and their lives. But this number doesn't take into account the hundreds of women we have to turn away every year because we just don't have the resources to help them. #16days #vawg

1/2 For this year's @unwomen.bsky.social #16daysofactivism campaign we're sharing the stories of 16 women connected to the mental health of domestic abuse survivors.

The lack of adequate mental healthcare is a secondary and largely invisible killer of women in the UK. #vawg

#JournoRequest We've supported over 25,000 women to recover from the trauma caused by #DomesticAbuse and have women who can speak to their experiences as well as experts who can provide insight into the unique ways abuse can affect #MentalHealth and emotional wellbeing.
