One of my HS juniors saw my poster and said "Is that...about the great vowel shift??" How my eyes lit up! 😂
The image displays a humorous sign with text written in a style mimicking Middle English, discussing a supposed historical event related to English vowels and King Richard. The sign states: "The vowelrs of the Englisshe lange weren supposed to shule yn 1377" (The vowels of the English language were supposed to shift in 1377). "but KYNG RICHARDE tolde them to wtaye the helle where they were." (but King Richard told them to stay the hell where they were.) This is a playful anachronism, as the Great Vowel Shift, a major phonological change in English, occurred much later than 1377 and was a gradual linguistic process, not a decree by a monarch. The image includes a drawing of King Richard, and decorative elements resembling eyes and swirls

That evening Hrodny's shepherd found Hoskuld's body and went home and told her of the slaying of her son. She spoke: 'He isn't really dead - was his head off?' 'No, it wasn't,' he said. 'I'll know when I see him,' she said. 'Get my horse and sled.' He did and made everything ready, and then they went to where Hoskuld lay. She looked at his wounds and spoke: 'It's as I thought -he's not quite dead, and Njal can heal worse wounds than these.'

Obligatory Christmas cookie post. The first 90 or so cookies are done. I've got more sugar cookies and peppermint to do tomorrow so there's enough for my students and fellow staff members as well! We'll not discuss the fact I've not finished my semester marking yet. I have priorities 😉🍪
