Here is a shot of Sassy the squirrel, outside my writing window. The momentary pause of insult barking allowed me to take a seemingly serene nature photo. But don’t be fooled; this grey bark licker is giving me the stink eye. It’s a bright day—light through tender leaves frames the scene, and our forest beyond is a lovely blurred backdrop. Sassy is leaning hunched on the poplar limb, all hands and feet gripped tightly to the bark. This side-body-view shows the elegant curl of its fluffy tail, hooked beneath the limb for balance. Sassy’s black almond-shaped eye stares into your soul. Bonus story: Five years ago, I received daily belligerent visits from this fluffer-nutter. Each morning, I’d wake and peacefully start the day with a few paragraphs before breakfast, and Sassy would watch me while barking and doing an interpretive bristle-tailed shuffle along the limb. One blustery day, the south wind snatched a peanut from those teensy hands. The wild-eyed rodent thrashed around afterwards like it was a premeditated assault. Which led to my free verse haiku: Beyond My Curtain Gust steals nut Evening the score Squirrel breaks wind I will say this about Sassy: “That squirrel passionately barked up every tree, and made our world chuckle.” I miss the long walks we’d take together. With one eye peeled for a drop assassination, I strolled as Sassy stalked me with the bare minimum of twig snaps and rustling leaves. When I paused, taking a photo, barking would echo down from above. Our loving rivalry will never be forgotten.
