On Therianism—an informal essay
I am a wolf—this despite my appearance, aptitudes, biology, and demeanor all indicating otherwise. I do not mean it metaphorically. I simply am a wolf, much as one simply is whatever they are. I do not buy into the idea of being enshrined with a divine soul, so I cannot say that mine is mismatched to my exterior. I certainly don’t believe in reincarnation, or spirits, or a mystical explanation for my sense of self. I certainly don’t wish to think in terms of supremacy; no valuable difference can be found between myself and humanity. We are different, but I am neither better nor worse. I simply am. I say I am a wolf because a variety of factors in my life have led me to that position. My childhood and nuerodivergency were major influences. I spent years not belonging in varying ways: to my peers, to my body, and to myself. I’m sure if my life had played out differently, I would not be a wolf—not simply because I wouldn’t believe myself to be, but because I fundamentally wouldn’t be. But it did, and I am. Animals have been an escape and a comfort, and they’ve continued to be a constant throughout my life. I’ve always sought them out as a calming presence, often favoring their company over people. I relate to them. Their lives are simpler, and as someone often overwhelmed with the society and politics of people, I find thinking in their terms helpful for navigating through my own. I get hungry. I sleep. I growl, so I prowl away to cool down. I’m filled with the need to play. I have a pack I’m deeply loyal to. And yet, it runs deeper than superficial similarities. It is simply right to think of me as an animal. For a long time, I’ve thought it was all at least partly kink for me, but there’s a large chunk of iceberg underneath I cannot ignore. Being treated like any other wolf is affirming. Going into a wolf headspace is affirming. It simply feels good to my brain in a way that I can never explain. Perhaps the best way I can put it is to liken it to finally wearing clothes that fit after always having them be too tight. At minimum, you stop noticing what’s wrong. At best, it’s a relief and a joy. I am a wolf despite my doubts. I am a wolf despite your doubts. I am a wolf because I say I am, and that makes it true. I am a wolf.
