Is it any wonder my book features talking crows when I grew up watching MR ED, the talking horse, and had a budgie who could sing the theme song? Like Dervish he had a habit of rewriting lyrics in his own way. #budgerigars #talkingbirds

The haunting melody and mysterious lyrics of Gypsy inspired the name of a character in my book. Naturally, Dervish couldn’t resist rewriting the song—to make it all about him.
It seems publishing didn’t close the chapter on Dervish and his antics

Dervish learns the hard way that in Nancy Grace’s courtroom, even a spilled water bottle is a federal offense. Justice is swift. And possibly delivered by a pointy pencil. #books #absurdistfiction #booksky

Dr. Horton was teaching a class of vet students when her elephant insisted on being part of the lesson—so she used him as a chalkboard. They were never meant to stay in the story, anyway, some characters find their way out, living on beyond the pages of "Seahorses in the Olive Jar." #BookishBsky

I always start a painting by looking through my photographs, waiting for something to catch my eye. With writing, it might be a passing thought that makes me chuckle or an emotion I need to get out. The next phase is crafting that spark into a vision—whether it’s a painting or a story. #ShareArt

My 2 shelties, 1 past 1 present, both inspired the character "Loki" in Seahorses in the Olive Jar. I've been a sheltie person my whole life, so of course they would be featured in my writing. #shelties #dogs #dogsInBooks

Walter tried a love potion. It didn’t work. Now he’s writing reviews instead of poetry. #absurdistfiction #booksky #readingcommunity💙

Acrylic on canvas: A raven among the sage, watching, waiting. Maybe it's in Yellowstone, maybe it's somewhere else--ravens know all the best places. Have you ever had a memorable raven encounter? #corvid #shareart #raven

Sometimes you learn new things about your characters after the book is written—like how Hank’s penchant for wearing clothes was why he had to ride a pig into town instead of flying. Here is Hank dressed as a scarecrow for his job as corn seed spokescrow.

Take a break from doom scrolling for a moment of farm-fresh corny absurdity—Hank's Yowl review is in! Another adventure from Sea Horses in the Olive Jar, where even the crows have opinions. #talkingBirds #crows #indieBooks

Once you publish a book, your characters slip into the world and start living their own lives—completely out of your control. Case in point: Gypsy’s Yowl review. #books #humor

Well lookie here the characters in my book are posting reviews on Yowl. #CrowsHaveOpinions #BookishHumor #FunnyAnimals

Dropped off this painting at a show, not knowing it was for sale. Almost as soon as I got home, I got a call-it had sold! Happy, but I never got to say goodbye.😀😢Artists will understand some paintings are favorites. #OilPainting #Wolves #ShareArt

From Sea Horses in the Olive Jar—a story where crows stand trial, inventors tinker, and love is as much illusion as it is real.

Not to mislead, there are sad places in "Sea Horses in the Olive Jar," at its heart, its about longing, loss, and all the absurd things we do to survive them. Don’t worry—Dervish won’t let anyone get too sentimental without throwing in a well-timed insult or an ill-advised business venture.

Meet Hank: corn seed salesman by day, corny songwriter by night. If there’s a tune in his heart (and there always is), it’s probably about love, loss, and lucrative seed deals. #newbook #booklovers #funnyreads

Meet the real Dervish—perched on my toaster oven, with his latest "junk drawer invention." His feathers have taken on a suspiciously burnt orange hue over time, though I’m sure it has nothing to do with any ill-advised attempts to snatch pepperoni off a pizza before it came out of the oven.

Meet the sculpture that inspired Walter, perched atop Wild Birds of North America, page 323, plate 19—the very spot where he first met Gypsy.

Hi, I'm Barb, an artist, writer, and crow enthusiast. My new book, "Seahorses in the Olive Jar," is an absurd, tender story about, crows, love, and the strange ways we try to matter. I painted the cover myself--this is how it looked while I was working on it.
