i bet it wouldn't be too hard to build a portable thermoacoustic engine for noise demos. a traveling-wave engine is like a Hofler tube but Louder. Use forced air cooling for the cold side, heat with propane from a 1lb canister, and you can get 162db, about as loud as a shotgun but a continuous tone
