I had to find out what the weather was like this morning by putting my bin out. I'd have to move 200 miles to Canning Town if I wanted to stay in bed and know I needed my thermals on to do that. 🤷‍♀️

Imagine having an inner city life and probably never having seen the sea before. Suddenly you're a boy aboard sailing ships that discovered the world, then ending your career aboard the more recognisable steel steamships of today.

Putting my sea legs away and I'm back to landlubbing. 🙁

I've been looking at the 12-year service history of a Royal Naval Seaman, boy to man, a list of every ship he served aboard.

HMS Impregnable was his training ship - one that had served in the Napoleonic Wars.

HMS Ganges was at the end of his career in 1900.

A centenary of British warships.

I'd not looked into his parentage but this is a snippet from a passenger list, Liverpool to Singapore, January 1928. His father was a rubber planter intending to live in F.M.S.: Federated Malay States.

I wonder if this is where my great grand-uncle worked in 1911.

(I cannot believe my brain remembered one piece of wire roper research from almost a decade ago but picked an orange pepper from the fridge instead of an apple this morning... 🤦‍♀️)

It was also Bridget of York's birthday, on this day in 1480. She was the seventh daughter of Plantagenet king Edward IV and Elizabeth Woodville. She spent virtually the whole of her adult life in a nunnery; silence over wordsmithying was her chosen strength.

Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum Geburtstag, Friedrich Schiller!

Born on this day in 1759, Schiller is famous for the poem Beethoven set to music in his 9th Symphony, "An die Freude" (Ode to Joy). I've chosen this verse in hope we suffer now for that better world in the future. 🌈🌍

(Thanks, Wikipedia 💜)

I've added the last soldier to my military database before Armistice Day 2025. More than a third have died in battle, virtually all of them during World War I.

See text attached to image for key to abbreviations.

Buy from us because we need to fund our genocide!

An advertisement on YouTube. Let them run all the way through... Make a pot of tea, go to the loo, check your phone. That way, they'll have to pay YT for the ad.

Here's one for the more mature (like a fine wine) British lefties...

Is Curtis Wolfy Smith's dad?

On this day in 1868, John Willis Menard (R-Louisiana) was the first African American elected to the United States Congress. Because of an electoral challenge, he was never seated.

I forgot to say that the headstone is now in the footpath around St. Peter and St. Leonard. I copied this from the web years ago but didn't save the link. (Kicks self ☹️)

Thomas Thresh and his wife Ann Berry (she remarried) were my 4th great grandparents. Their son died in Callas, Peru, presumably joining the gold rush out there at that time

It turned out to be a hoax.

Another branch of my ancestors came from Horbury. Nostell is close to Crofton so I had loads of family there too. Here's my great great grandfather, who lived in the gate house and was keeper of their deer park.

This is my very own All Saints Church in Crofton. There's an unbroken line of direct ancestors baptised here, from myself all the way back to the 1630s, the beginning of their parish records. Hundreds of relatives sleep in its grounds.

@jimmykimmellive.bsky.social calling for Fatberg Einstein to compete against Jasmine Crockett and AOC in an IQ test on TV is genius! If he says "no" to proving he's the smartest dementia patient ever, he's the bigliest TACO ever. And if he accepts...

From the same news snippet... 5-year-olds playing with dynamite lol. Well, not lol, but... lol.

I could spend all day reading old newspapers. 😊

I'm happy not to shave on Sunday but wouldn't it be lovely if religion didn't meddle in politics in the U,S,?

As for little Bobby Smith... Don't let child labour become a thing again!🤦‍♀️

I love that Russia also turns its soldiers into sunflower food. The bees then collect the pollen to make the honey I have with hot milk at bedtime! Deeee-licious! 🌻🥳🌻

The person I'm currently working on in my family tree fell on Flanders' Fields at Vlamertinge. It never gets any easier researching these brave souls but I'm grateful to Belgium for honouring their sacrifice.

The British Army sent out a husband and father; only the attached were returned.

That's me not travelling via the Channel Tunnel! I reckon there's a good 15-mile swim to board the train. 🌊🚉
