By vampire standards, Lestat wasn’t fully wrong. And I think it’s interesting how the story challenges the concept of an unreliable narrator realizing he is unreliable in real time.

It’s a tough situation, but for much of the misery Louis experienced and Claudia fell victim to, Louis is mostly to blame… he’s to blame for his heart, for his sympathy, for his humanity as a vampire.

This included only eating from animals, refusing to kill if it could be avoided, and ultimately seeking to have a daughter, at the expense of violating laws of vampirism he wasn’t fully aware of. He melted into his grief (I don’t really blame him), and neglected his partner.

The problem with this relationship was that Louis didn’t know what he was getting into fully with vampirism.. when he fully experienced it, he didn’t like it as much as he thought he would. So he started seeking opportunities of humanity.

And during the trial, he incriminated himself. He even asked to face the same consequences, but the coven denied him this… given the fate he’d warned Louis about for Claudia and the relationship he had with Louis, while it IS cruel, it makes sense for him to choose to save Louis…

He was right about what would happen to Claudia as a vampire if she was turned as a child. He insisted against it, and caved for Louis. Then they both tried to kill him, and he came back to tell the story.

The solution that she thought was effective for dealing with this discrimination was to conform. When in reality, the solution was to band together with our brothers and sisters and continue to speak the way we always have. Because we don’t deserve discrimination no matter how we speak.

By conforming to this, we lost a bit of our culture in my household.

Not only that, but by conforming to this, she was othering members of our community who stood strong in their use of AAVE. As if they deserved the treatment they received because they refused to conform.

She wanted me to speak “proper” because she wanted me safe. She felt (and I guess knew?) that black individuals who spoke primarily in AAVE would be targeted more by police, discriminated against more in the workforce, etc.

However!!!
