A cog in the wheel of public service. The kind that often requires a helmet. Aspirations outpacing capacity. Veteran of war and peace and then a bit more war.
Not sure when this happened but I’ve long thought that it isn’t a good idea to have the school playground near a busy intersection. Not in this town.

Looking in the mirror after a fire when I think I might have a little soot on my face

Reminded today of a FB post I made on this day in 2011. Things took a decidedly different turn.

Thermometer popped out of the roast and for a minute I thought it might be slightly overdone.

The STL tornado was devastating. I am thoroughly captivated and moved by this photo by Laurie Skrivan and the accompanying quote. The stoicism and “stiff upper lip” that is conveyed is both inspiring and heart wrenching.

Moved the youngest into St. Louis University today. Very impressive reception. Not a bad view from his room either.

Got ALICE (#IYKYK) out today for a little 5k ruck in honor of the replica Vietnam War Memorial’s arrival at Jefferson Barracks Park. Rucking on a 97° day may not have been the smartest decision I’ve made, but probably fitting.

Most of the time I had no idea what was going on, but this was a quintessential Melbourne experience. I know from the scoreboard that Sidney beat Richmond.

Was reminded by a friend so I dug out this memory. Bought in Germany before deploying to Desert Storm. First reminder of things are cool until one day they’re not.

Helped facilitate some training with the recruits at the academy today. Here’s them performing a “Vent, Enter, Search” drill to find and rescue an occupant. 💪🏻 work.

Shout out to Capt Vernon Smith on his retirement yesterday. 37-year veteran of the dept, with 10 years as a city paramedic before that, and a damn good friend.

The second half of the shift. When the day turns to night. When the city shows its worst and we’re at our best.

The station vacuum cleaner has a nice shade of city orange so I made the obvious addition with a sharpie.

Perfect weather for an impromptu training drill with our brothers from Truck 34. Engine 23 deployed a portable monitor for a street level attack while 34 hit it from above.

If you get this whole fever chills thing going on, I highly recommend a giant fleece lama hoodie.

After another shift has a fire I take my crew to evaluate the bldg and pre=plan courses of action for the next fire there. This photo shows why. Imagine entering this room under heavy smoke conditions.
Same scenario put me off work for a month.
