100% recommend 'looking at writing black characters' cuz we get that kinda rumination a lot... i think eventually we just decided it felt Bad, like we were putting marginalized people on a pedestal because of our own fear, and that that fear kept us from creating more diverse work

& like ultimately it's everyone's job to all hit our racial biases with sticks (+ fatphobia, ableism, etc), but it makes me wonder to what extent we've created even more barriers to people who are interested in portraying diverse casts, as opposed to just sharing our knowledge & uplifting each other

tbh yeah i read a zine recently by ophanimkei talking about like the Representation Discourse and i think to an extent, if you take a group extremely prone to moral OCD & go "if you do this in a way i, a stranger, disapprove of, you will be eaten by wolves" youre going to get a lot more hesitation

like obviously its We Live In A Society just as much as any personal thing. popular media is dominated by whiteness & mukokuseki (altho less so lately) but like idk. if we praise fandom for its diversity it shouldnt be hard to find an artist who can draw nonwhite characters comfortably. and yet
