Appreciating the beauty of my garden. Firecracker dahlias and friends. Hope to take a photo of this beauty in sunshine. Continuing cool overcast coastal weather until evening and the sun comes out just before sunset.

My favorite time of year - when Costco has dahlias! Two trips and 18 new beauties in my garden for our new redwood raised beds. Gratitude for a garden of flowers - 2 lovely bouquets from crushed blooms. Beauty everywhere.

Parting view of Cochem - vineyards covering the hillside, castle perched on the peak, residents enjoying the parks along the riverbank.

Wine tasting the nectar of the Moselle Valley. Delightful vineyard owner narrated the offerings at long tables in this museum of viticulture history artifacts in the centuries old building.

Castle life is not all that it's cracked up to be. The medieval toll castle was upgraded then ransacked by French troops of Louis XIV. In ruin, Berlin capitalist Louis Ravené bought it for cheap and renovated it for his bride. Not keen on dank castle life, she took off with a younger businessman.

Reichsburg Cochem literally means Imperial Castle in Cochem. Poised above the Moselle River it has a storied history of affluence and ruin. A stunning mosaic of St. Christopher towers over visitors.

Morning fog in Cochem, on the Moselle River in Germany.

Walking around Bernkastel, Germany for the afternoon. Actually 2 towns (Bernkastel-Kues) combined from either side of the Moselle River. A fabulous Roman arch bridge connects both towns.

The diversity of Trier! Konstantin Basilica is equal parts church, palace, built on the foundations of the Roman fortress, with statues of Romans along the church walls. It looks like a fortress inside. We ended at Porta Nigra with the statue of Karl Marx (his birthplace) along the way.

Boarding our Viking riverboat at Trier, once a great European capital, it was 1 of 4 capitols during the Roman Empire Tetrarchy - founded by Augustus and his favorite summer palace. In the Middle Ages Charlemagne and other aristocrats had expansive palaces and villas in Trier.

The American Cemetery in Luxembourg. A thoughtful stop to reflect on when America was a respectful ally, focused on working together with other countries.

Delightful town of Reims - trams and bicycles, town squares and wonderful food.

Reims Cathedral front and back focusing on my favorites: gargoyles and the Marc Chagall stained glass windows.

The Museum of Natural History in Paris with some of my favorite megafauna like mastodons and ground sloths. Delightful to see so many students sketching and studying among the bones. Fossils are the best animals to keep in museums.

Fascination & Horror. Deeply mixed feelings at the Museum of Natural History in Paris (Florence, NYC) seeing the hundreds of animals murdered & stuffed for human edification and entertainment. Writing several short stories (ala Mark Twain) about this conundrum.
