i finished hauntii. here are my thoughts. go bananas. may write more
a series of messages from me on discord with spoilers for hauntii, reads "i finished hauntii very very interesting game its very unassuming, but its left me with a lot to think about the core tension of the game is giving up these "key crystals," little "chunks of your soul" made up of the memories you collect and rediscover with stars, in order to ascend from purgatory to heaven, i guess but like, you, the player, still remember them and the gameplay upgrades you get by collecting them still remain when you give them up and i think that's thematically important you're not giving up these memories, you're letting yourself move past them to build a new life with the lessons they gave you and i think its a love story? its very cute there has to be some religious commentary at play too, the final boss is a big amalgamation of 'biblically accurate angel' imagery and NPCs refer to your target area as heaven and you dip down into hell for a second and get little horns but i don't know how well that ties into the core theme of the game or if its moreso a recognizable backdrop that is easily used for drama/signposting because like, obviously you don't want to go to hell. obviously you want to go to heaven. but you aren't IN hell, you're in this neat little purgatory with its own society and rituals and fun and spectacle and beauty but since the choice of staying is never really presented to you, it can kind of speak to the inevitability of letting go of the ones we love to live with ourselves and discover a new... us, so to speak i really liked hauntii it was fun"
