Once, in the Before Time, I did a lot of incredibly nerdy stuff.
Permanent win for white supremacists. Non-white people are never going to trust we're worth taking a risk to help if we may later decide to throw them back to the wolves. Guess who'll be left for us to make deals with?

I have fun with any story in which the world responds to a character's nature and moral/thematic choices. Sanderson's Stormlight Archive, Modesitt's early Recluse novels. Or contrast a paladin,l for whom Right makes Might with a world that mostly operates on Might makes Right.

I prefer high-magic settings for just like I like space opera/'sufficiently advanced' SF like the Culture books more than harder/near-future stuff. I enjoy a good gee-whiz cool magical whatsit as much as anyone and I like it when a fantasy metaphysic can engage directly with the themes of the story.

To the tune of "Sharp-Dressed Man"

I even like Heart but there is no way in hell that it is the 17th greatest rock band of all time.

Strong 'early D&D illustrated polearm varieties' vibes

Well, you did warn me. I should only blame myself. But somehow, I still blame you.

Ok, fair enough. Your numbers seem reasonable, i was off base.
November 25, 2025 at 4:44 AM
I agree it's too much but I think the difference is smaller than people want to admit and everyone just seems to want to say 'numbers too big' instead
November 25, 2025 at 3:50 AM
Yes, it would be a huge chunk of your yearly income, that is in fact the point
November 25, 2025 at 3:46 AM
Ok. How much do you think that should cost for a family of 4? What does your 'Other stuff' budget look like?
November 25, 2025 at 3:38 AM
This definitely didn't need to be in my feed
November 25, 2025 at 3:36 AM
No, the question remains 'is 21k a year a reasonable estimate for the minimum viable cost for everything not counted under Childcare, Food, Transportation, Housing, and Healthcare.
November 25, 2025 at 3:33 AM
My decision not to give y'all money continues to be incredibly justified
November 24, 2025 at 10:11 PM
That's fair! But I do think that saying 'it doesn't cost that much' isn't any more useful than him saying 'it does cost that much' without those answers.

Speaking as a larper, this made me cackle wildly

Every accusation an admission

If you assume assistance but don't include it in the actual dollar calculation, then someone who hits that income number but lacks the support is going to be mislabeled.

We shouldn't have to assume support in order to have aliveable income.
November 24, 2025 at 5:26 PM
Support from friends, neighbors, and community absolutely should not be assumed when determining poverty!
November 24, 2025 at 5:20 PM
What do you think electric, water, gas/oil, clothes, household sundries, maintenance, home repairs, etc. cost for 4 people for a year? Because it sure isn't less than 15k.

I agree that 130k seems high but I also think that there's a lot of downplaying of costs going on in opposition to it
November 24, 2025 at 4:57 PM
...why would you assume community and family support and include them when calculating the poverty line? Not everyone does have community and family support, and of those who do it's reasonable to assume those supporters might also be at or below the poverty line.
