This morning, we sent this letter to the masthead and leadership of the Times, expressing our support for our colleagues in the @nytguildtech.bsky.social.

The Times needs to give them a fair contract now! But if management forces them to go on strike, we have their backs. ✊

Text is: As members of the Unit Council of the Wirecutter Union, we stand with our colleagues in the Times Tech Guild and will support them in their collective actions as they seek what is long overdue: a fair contract. Now. After more than two years of bargaining, Tech Guild members have voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike. We salute our colleagues’ commitment to getting their contract finished, ensuring that all workers at The Times have a more equitable, safe, and just workplace. Times management has fought the Times Tech Guild every step of the way since workers first announced their intention to form a union in 2021. We at Wirecutter were disappointed to see management’s sluggish pace, especially after our most recent negotiation cycle — which both sides said was an example of efficient and productive bargaining. The Tech Guild deserves the bargaining conditions we enjoyed: frequent, multi-hour bargaining sessions that allowed both sides to put in the work and deliberations that are necessary for a good contract. We care deeply about the work of The New York Times and do not want to see any disruption to that work, particularly during a crucial election season. But management has failed to make many substantive counter proposals and is refusing to schedule sufficient bargaining time to reach a reasonable deal. The best way to avoid a disruption to all of our work is for management to offer a fair contract as quickly as possible. The Tech Guild will know best what actions they should take in order to get the deal they deserve, but we want to make something perfectly clear: We will back the Times Tech Guild and its members if their unit is forced—by management's obstinance—to strike.
