I feel I should clarify that I was thinking of implementing 1-2 toll lanes a la 405, not tolling the whole freeway.

And if I had to choose I'd much rather close most/all downtown ramps. I think I-5 would work far better as a buried bypass.

all the libs I know are pretty fucking mad about this

Interestingly I-5 thru Seattle is one of the widest section of freeway in the US with 13 lanes going through the heart of downtown. Unsurprisingly it has horrible traffic, and I can't really think of any solutions besides closing ramps and tolling.

I agree for the most part. I'd like to see large scale design changes too. In a small way, tolling also pushes the incentives in the right way. Free roads are a subsidy and subsidizing driving is bad.

(I am generally in favor of lower standards here. It's good for kids to share a room and wear hand-me-downs and do cheap/free extracurriculars)

I wonder if there's something to CHHs observations about rising standards of care for children. For example the idea of every child having their own room. I remember that was for rich kids when I was growing up in the 90s, now it seems to be the expectation for middle class and even lower-middle.

account called Disappearing Seattle and it's just photos of cigarette butts on the sidewalk

they should run on things that will win. once you win then you can actually help people.
November 9, 2025 at 5:27 AM
Ideally: do things, and then work extremely hard to inundate people with narratives and content about those things, preferably in sound bites, tiktoks, snappy slogans, etc.

In other words do what right wing media has been doing for 30 years, but also help people and don't lie egregiously

I'm only nitpicking one point on your list, I believe the percentage of people taking plane trips is near all time highs. Couldn't find more recent data, but this goes to 2023: www.bts.gov/browse-stati...

I gotta drive for work and toll roads are the only thing that let me get anywhere around Seattle in a decent time so I'm a big fan. It's regressive if you don't consider it as a Pigouvian tax; i.e. it internalizes some of the externalities of driving. But should be priced to keep cars moving
November 9, 2025 at 4:41 AM
Raise the toll and spend it on better transit. Boom, done.

hit em with a land value tax so they can't leave the space empty

"Food" isn't contentious, the people are advocating for their basic interests against corrupt farmers who exploit nebulous "farming practices" to grow "food" for people to "eat."

Okay whatever the ACA then. Fighting back on rising healthcare costs was a key goal, but again that was long before the 2022+ inflation narrative.

There's a subtle difference between "I'm tackling inflation" and "these specific things should be cheaper."

e.g. YIMBYs aren't generally considered part of the inflation narrative even though reducing housing costs is the main goal. It's more to do with Baumol's cost disease over the long term

I think the overlapping outlines should also correspond to a disconnection between the two thoughts, kind of like a paragraph break.

Agreed. Meanwhile the first comment is feverishly proclaiming that social media makes it harder to spread lies.

I'm not on twitter anymore due to decreasing my social media time overall. I wouldn't recommend someone to go there. But if you're a combative person with other sources of information and social media outside of twitter I don't think it's likely to tilt your views.
