the Jack DeJohnette listening party continues: I had forgotten both that JDJ plays on Jan Garbarek’s PLACES and that PLACES is actually a pretty killer album

and it has one of the all-time great mood-drenched ECM cover photos

I just listen to the wind, and the insects, and the frogs, and the birds. and that’s good.

you’re not going anywhere, except around and through the woods. you’re not “getting anything done,” besides continuing to exist in and around other forms of life, without bothering them too much (hopefully).

and I get to listen to music, uninterrupted. and sometimes I turn off the music and—

there’s really nothing to summarize. yes, a walk is good for the body. but for me, the biggest point of the walk is *the walk*—the choice to spend time 45 minutes or an hour walking, just being there in the woods. (and the privilege of enjoying material conditions that enable me to make that choice)

and the older I get, the more meaningful and precious these walks in the woods become for me.

you can’t package a walk in the woods. you can’t buy this particular walk in the woods, because the trails are free and open to anyone. you can’t summarize a walk in the woods.

there really is nothing like talking a walk in brisk weather while listening to a good ECM album. look at this gorgeous afternoon sunlight hitting the trees from the side.

Jack DeJohnette died and I turned a year older—both things happened this week.

it had been way too long since I’d taken a walk in the nature preserves near where I live, so I went out today. I wanted to be sure to listen to some Jack DeJohnette while I walked. and I wanted it to be a nice, spacious ECM album. I went with this one, by the Rypdal/Vitouš/DeJ trio

wasn’t somebody requesting more photos of dinner? here we go: spaghetti alla carbonara, with bacon substituted for the pancetta. scallions also not canonical, I suppose

I read a very favorable review of this album and thought the program looked intriguing, so Ive listened to it. I don’t know if I get it. tbh sometimes it feels like Levit constructs his albums simply to raise eyebrows.

during a walk in the woods yesterday, 9yo and I spotted various instances of what looked like pieces of cotton strewn around on the ground, often tangled in leaves and twigs (ex in photo below). I’m assuming it isn’t actually cotton bolls, but what am I seeing?

dang I forgot about this album. pretty good. kind of like if Jaco Pastorius were Pat Metheny, sometimes playing Steve Reich long lost pieces
