I tried to explain this to my wife and here's what I came up with. Did I get it right? Did I miss anything? Tagging @ckohwrites.bsky.social to follow replies in case I got it wrong. (Also, thank you for posting stuff like this, it's freaking important.)
Explanation: 1. The monster they're talking about there is from a deeply religious story with huge significance to the indigenous people of this land. They're so evil that even talking about them is asking for Bad Shit To Happen. 2. This "editor"/"anthropologist" person is arguing that indigenous people will write about them and thus she has to accept them if she doesn't want to shut out indigenous authors. 3. The poster is pulling out their hair because NO INDIGENOUS PERSON WOULD SUBMIT A STORY LIKE THAT. It would be like you writing a poem propositioning a demon to hot nasty sex in entirely religious terms that actually invite the demon to possess you. It just... can't be done safely. 4. The lady just isn't getting it, and is offended to have been called out about it. Plus, she's decided that "because natives came up with it" means it's "folklore" not "religion" and that makes it OK to steal.

1. The (Average) Plagiarism Machine Let’s begin with the source. AI is trained using copyrighted material—subtitles, fan-fiction, people’s posts. Writing something means it’s yours, copyright you. Posting it on a site almost never removes your copyright to your text. AI was created with massive datasets of copyrighted material, which it then remixes in a mathematical predictive fashion that results in text we think has meaning, which the machine itself does not understand, and which spits out the words that were stolen, frequently verbatim.

Found it at www.science.org/content/blog... and it struck a chord: so often we want to remove that which annoys us without understanding what it's there for. Plus, the writing is damn eloquent.
