This is where i’m at. There’s little to explain our body politic right now if you don’t make central the idea that we are captive to a bottom feeding, mean-spirited, and yes, racist/misogynist culture.

Exactly. Dems/liberals shouldn’t be shamed for appealing to our better angels. Nor should they be bullied/blamed for failing to speak to our darkest impulses. Sadly, tho, we’ll have to go through pain & suffering for people to come to their senses and seek a return to a more optimistic vision.

Remember his promise to be Dictator on Day 1? Remember his wishcasting of unleashing police for a day of extreme violence to warn against future protests? Remember his vow to go after his political enemies?

You think that was all in jest?

Republicans? They'll be cowering in a corner, half cheering him on, half terrorized. Trump will make sure nobody can stand up to him.

Each egregious move will be followed by another, and another. And by the time he gets around to pursuing his political enemies with the force of law, he will act with impunity.

Sure, Democrats will tsk tsk, wring their hands, clutch their pearls. But, they'll be powerless.

The larger view: Trump is signalling that he has democracy in his sights. He will tear down pillar after pillar of our norms until the last ember of the smoldering ruins is put out.

That’s the point. Trump wants loyalists to him AND Putin.

Don’t discount countless other out-of-sight betrayals.

In other words, most Americans don’t want Trump to do policy. They just want the entertainment, more performative anger/resentment and excitement/chaos.
