We err in seeing migrants as takers. They give so much that nourish us in body and soul. We should pause and express gratitude to those who pick our food, care for our elders, sing us songs. They are not "other." They are neighbors and they are us.

July 7, 2025: An Immigration Force swept through MacArthur Park in Los Angeles. Mayor Karen Bass eventually persuaded them to leave saying, “What happened to the criminals, the drug dealers, the violent individuals? In the park today were children. It was their summer camp, their summer day camp.”

July 6, 2025. Photos of the missing are appearing in Los Angeles. Missing son...missing daughter...missing grandmother. Where are these neighbors? Why have they been abducted by ICE? "Freedom and justice" for all means all of us.

July 2, 2025: Flower vendors along the road outside Forest Lawn Cemetery in Hollywood were abducted by ICE. Bystanders recorded their capture on cell phones. Their buckets of flowers remained abandoned on the street.

The Trump Administration has cancelled the legal refugee status of hundreds of thousands of Afghanis, Ukrainians, Venezuelans, Haitians and Cubans. I understand these shut-them-out policies as a shameful echo of our past. Are we destined to repeat the cycle?

I'll be playing Leonard Cohen's "Anthem" today: the 249th year of our choosing to be free from tyranny. We must make that choice again. Having so deeply cracked the facade of our "exceptionalism," to reveal our human condition, it is time to find the light and the beauty and create life anew.
