It’s not just market for XBOX, it’s also Microsoft setting them up for highest levels of pressure. Part of their decisions are coming from within, so on a whole that’s theirs to own.

XBOX doesn’t rent seek. XBOX didn’t exist before Steam. XBOX didn’t buy the largest studios to rent games for subscriptions. The industry was not affected by mobile gaming whatsoever. F2P/forever games don’t make up more than half of certain platforms’ revenue.

What are we doing here?

Of the Series X that is (for proper context).

That’s a $150 price hike since May of this year.

A rise of 30% in just 5 months, after attempts of selling the console for less before May.

Outer Worlds 2 had no reason to change in pricing at this stage, unless forecast signals (along with preorders) indicated otherwise.

Variable pricing amongst triple A games as a norm is here to stay, with only those with massive sway winning at the higher tiers.

Which is good for Marvel/Disney but how good for the studio in the long-term?

The reason the game gained its install base so fast was because of the IP, but as we know with Spider-Man 2, that shit ain’t cheap.

Netease does well with Marvel IP… for now… it is an immediate success for sure.

Microsoft is in a way better software position but I don’t see the industry getting healthy by keeping costs and release cycles as is.

The ballooning costs are eating into profits which will continue layoffs to maintain the illusion of strong quarters.

A fundamental shift perhaps needs to happen.

PlayStation’s bet on live-service games is utterly imploding.

Along with AAA output at the mercy of budgets and dev cycles, this needs to be a wake up call to them and the rest of the industry.

Go back to basics, focus on smaller projects with a few AAA sprinkles. Make those AA absolute bangers.
