I've never really gotten this. I had always assumed that when it came to Jesus and his role in salvation and in the Church, that the key point was the fact that he was God incarnate, not that he had a penis. I had always assumed Jesus' penis was pretty tangential to the whole salvation thing.

Well, presumably he doesn't see it as existential *for him* and I think often in people's minds, if it's not existential for them, then it's not existential at all.

I think about this every time I hear a Canyon Wren. They are so small and their sound is so loud (and so haunting).

Yes, not everyone has the resources to get a diagnosis and that is a huge problem. There are race and gender disparities who gets diagnosed as well. But it is not limited only to "rich kids."
December 3, 2025 at 8:34 PM
Honestly I suspect one of the biggest issues is students thinking that because they didn't have an accommodation in high school, they don't need / wouldn't get an accommodation in college, which is not the case at all.
December 3, 2025 at 8:29 PM
I honestly have no idea how difficult it is to apply for accommodations as a student. I know that as staff, it is not difficult, at least not at my university. I think basically you just need a note from a doctor, and then to wait for DR to process it (they only have so many staff).
December 3, 2025 at 8:27 PM
I don't think that at all. It's just that realistically speaking a university (especially one less rich than an Ivy) only has so much space and staffing to devote to testing centers and we can't give every student -- or even half the students -- longer than the normal class time on exams.
December 3, 2025 at 8:25 PM
At that point I guess the system melts down. But at the universities I've taught at (all state schools) there have never been more than a few students per class who have extended time accommodations.
December 3, 2025 at 8:10 PM
The maximum time that can be applied to the entire class for an exam is however long the class is scheduled to be in that room, which is to say, the normal class length.

But, anyway, unless you're wanting to change the ADA this is how it works. People entitled to extra time get, well, extra time.
December 3, 2025 at 8:07 PM
Well, it's not like a student is going to know how long any given exam should take or how long they should need. For that matter, I as a professor don't know that, either. Students in a class vary widely in how long it takes for them to do the exam.

But regardless, that is how it works.
December 3, 2025 at 8:06 PM
A time-and-half accommodation means whatever the entire class gets, that person gets half again as long. If you "give the accommodation to everyone" by giving everyone longer on the exam (ignoring the classroom scheduling issues) someone with the accommodation is still legally entitled more time.

I mean, or you could just Google to read various university websites about what constitutes a distraction-free environment. It doesn't necessarily always mean a separate cubicle but it does mean something above and beyond a normal test setting.
December 3, 2025 at 7:42 PM
No, that is still what we do. But that's not considered distraction-free. Generally to get a distraction-free environment students go to the DR testing center.

That said, I will say most of my students with a time-and-a-half, distraction-free-environment accommodations don't use them.
December 3, 2025 at 7:40 PM
Two, yes, it does require different venue.

Say my class is from 1 to 1:50. Time-and-half means those students get 75 minutes, which would be 1 to 2:15… except another class starts in that classroom at 2. Or perhaps I as the professor have another class to go teach at 2.
December 3, 2025 at 5:14 PM
One, ADHD accommodations generally also include a distraction-free environment, which means the student not taking the exam in a classroom full of other students.
December 3, 2025 at 5:13 PM
Where are these 100 people taking the exam? It’s not in the classroom, it’s in a disability resources testing center, which is finite in size.
December 3, 2025 at 5:04 PM
I’d kinda like to try being a housecat for a few minutes a day. Looks cozy.

Humans are scientifically interesting because while humans are only a small part of the entire universe, humans are the biggest and most important part of OUR existence. I mean, I'm sitting here being human RIGHT NOW! I spend every minute of my life being human.

I don't know that I would even call the people of Gondor "hard men" as I understand the term, either. I mean, yes, Gondor is far from perfect and has also fallen from its height, but ultimately it is still a city where wisdom and learning are greatly valued.
December 1, 2025 at 10:11 PM
I mean, the assignment was to write a reaction paper to an article which demonstrates you have read it and responds to the contents. This student didn't do didn't say anything about the article whatsoever. She didn't meet the most basic requirement of the assignment.

Yeah, clearly the actual trick is to be married to someone who makes enough money to support you, is willing to do so, and hope that at no point they decide to trade you in for a newer model.

I remember my parents explaining this to me as a young child when I found a box of tinsel in the bottom of the Christmas decor and asked why we didn’t use it.

Also why all the Easter baskets were covered with a bed sheet when not in use (we had the old plastic Easter grass when I was growing up).

…but then paradoxically they start to think they should get to have at least a little taste of what the super-rich have, which put them beyond their means because they are not super-rich.
November 29, 2025 at 3:20 AM
Yeah, I have always assumed that one of the problems is that people at this income level are rich, but they’re not SUPER DUPER rich, and they think that if you’re not SUPER DUPER rich, then you’re not rich. So they think they’re not rich…

If you click on the (somewhat buried) “Feeds” menu item you will get the option to just see friends (and some ads). In the iOS app clicking on “Friends” will do the same thing.
