Here, shipping probably contributes a lot of the cost. Mattresses are one of the few things you dont want to scrimp on imo

I agree. I think the absence of functionality in an ecosystem can be found in open source projects and bespoke software. Thats how I like things. And imo thats far more consumer friendly.

If MS could put out something like VLC or FFmpeg I'd be all for it. But not loss of functionality please

I do know the zeitgeist is shifting though, as evidenced by the video and from the echoes of the terminally online.

When things work and aren't egregious no one cares to challenge the status quo. I think its just so pervasive it's gotten to the point where the general public is starting to notice

You could totally wean yourself of google/Microsoft etc. Self host an AI LLM like pewdiepie did in the video and have it be ethically responsible, private, and configurable.

And it wouldn't cost as much money/time as you'd think.

But the fact it costs any at all is an automatic no for most users

It is a double edged sword though. I feel like we trade away things like privacy, configurability, and ownership, for ease-of-use way to quickly.

The children might yearn for Linux but there's a reason windows/mac have the marketshare they do.

There used to be a lot more asked of the user in terms of experience and configurability. Edges were rougher.

The business decision to switch to more consumer friendly and closed off ecosystems is generally I would say, a positive in terms of adoption. Especially with the rise of SaaS.

No one deserves to be hacked. But some deserve to be invaded.
