Donald Trump has acted like the Congress doesn’t matter, like the courts don’t matter, like the electorate doesn’t matter, like the law and the Constitution don’t matter. All the while the Republicans have greased the skids of his impunity. !/2

I support getting ICE out of our cities and homes! Not just LA, but any American cities and towns – other than controlling immigration at the border. The militarization and extreme excess has to stop! #ImmigrantsBelong

It’s critical to understand what the Republican budget slashing Medicaid by $880 BILLION would do. Not only will thousands if not millions die, but thousands of businesses will shutter. (From Jannette F. Bechdolt on Substack)

Well, you can but you shouldn’t.

The followers and retweeters apparently are addicted to “heroes vs villains” and to outrage.

The perpetrators seem to have creation of that narrative and stoking the fires of outrage as their business model, for $$$ and power. Or even a determination to end democracy in the US as we’ve known it.

Another blow to protections for ordinary Americans while giving more power to corporations. Plus the decision elevates uninformed judges above experts empowered by Congress to serve Americans and the public interest.

We stayed in our friends’ cabin in a Norwegian national forest. Besides their own two, their friends on a two-day trail ride stopped for lunch and a little rest.

In fact-checking whether a claim that MLK's daughter really wrote advice that is circulating, I found an updated version on her Be A King Facebook page. So yes, she shared the earlier version and this one too.

One group that arose during WWII, the Society of the White Rose, tried to construct their own analog social network to fight fascism. Creativity and even joy have been part of the experience of those resisting tyranny. 8/8

Life under dictators are dark, as strongmen try to destroy the will and dignity of the people and erase empathy. Resistance, it turns out, is often a way to recover and move back into the light. Maybe this thread is too dark. But the signs are there. 7/

Not to minimize the danger, exile, political assassinations, violence, and incarceration happen to some of those who resist a strongman leader. Putin's regime has all the hallmarks. 6/

The strongmen always target students and faculty. 5/
November 16, 2024 at 5:59 PM
Resistance activities reclaim public space strongmen regimes use to control bodies and minds, calling out the government's violence, corruption, and exploitation. Joy and solidarity can be part of the experience. 4/

Mass protests tend to come later, after a build-up. 3/
November 16, 2024 at 5:59 PM
Small unarmed acts of protest are often how it starts. Art, truth-telling, satire, laughing at the dictator. 2/

🧵After the election I've started Ruth Ben-Ghiat's 2019 book, "Strongmen." It's from a grim place, where authoritarianism has taken hold, crushing the people for awhile. But resistance arises in each case, and the past points to possibilities and perils both. 1/

What a sweetheart. I’m so sorry you lost her, esp then. I’m glad she was in your loving arms though.

The pain of losing our dogs sometimes makes us avoid getting another. But then we don’t get to have the love and laughter they bring us either. We lost our Buddy last year.💔
My husband isn’t ready.

From Josh Marshall from his Talking Points Memo's subscribers' newsletter (quoted by Hubbell). "[Giving up is] the most pernicious form of anticipatory obedience.…A better answer…“Okay, let’s see you try.” It’s not easy. …It requires maintaining a lot of public support. It requires patience."
November 16, 2024 at 5:34 AM
From Robert B. Hubbell's "The Power of Not Giving Up." "The strongest defense against a psychological terror campaign designed to instill dread and provoke despair is to refuse to give up!"
