Agreed. I think the sport is trending towards two super-conferences and at that point ND would almost have to join. All the other schools and programs would be competing in ancillary tournaments or bowls

I don't think the committee will ever penalize an SEC or BIG 10 team for playing in their conference title game. Too much money in keeping those games, so that's what the committee will help the broadcast partners do. Unfortunately the ACC and Big 12 aren't on that level now.. possibly never again

It's all about money and ESPN's monopolization of the sport, yes. From NDs perspective, I fully understand not wanting to join a conference. In this particular playoff scenario under the current rules, I do think being in one would have benefitted them.

For Notre Dame, I believe that would work. Because unlike BYU, Notre Dame has the brand and history which makes the committee and ESPN more intriguing from an entertainment product standpoint.
