We demonstrate that basal melting can intensify coastal currents in West Antarctica and the westward transport of sea ice. This change in transport results in sea ice anomalies consistent with observations pre 2016.

We demonstrate that basal melting can intensify coastal currents in West Antarctica and the westward transport of sea ice. This change in transport results in sea ice anomalies consistent with observations pre 2016.
We use an ocean/sea-ice/ice-shelf model and perturb the freshwater input at the ice shelf base. This novel approach allows for realistic freshwater input (location and depth). The sea ice anomaly in our experiment aligns with the observed pattern in West Antarctica/Ross Sea.
