IMO, it's bad to be dogmatically Theater-of-the-Mind, but it's also boring to be slavishly committed to tactical precision. "Hybrid Theater" is a good compromise!

I love using "mirror parties" in my campaigns. These are groups of NPCs that are shaped more or less like the player's characters. I've learned a few bits of best practices over the years, so here's my suite of advice for GMing those sorts of parties.
