we just doubled our specialist teaching this year (so y2 and y3 specials become two semester rather than 1).

this in the context of a lot of worrying examples where specialist teaching is under sustained assault (some v close to home)

specialist teaching is such an important part of how academics often think of our pedagogy but years of experience suggest many students do not share our sense of the importance of this, or do not really know what we mean by it. i fear this bodes (more) ill.

ive also loved team teaching, when done right, and with immense privilege of having brilliant colleagues who value collaboration. i always learn a lot.

but valuable only if it complements specialist teaching opportunities: that’s not even something everyone has within the department where i teach

it remains amazing and brilliant to have this freedom and control to choose what to teach, across a whole self designed course. tomorrow we go into the archives, armed with some ideas from readings
