This field looks idyllic and peaceful now, but on this day 959 years ago, it was the site of a bloody battle that changed the course of history, and also permanently changed the English language.

In the middle of a quiet street in the elegant neighbourhood of #Morningside, #Edinburgh, you can still see the two "hanging stanes", the site of the gallows where the last two highwaymen were hanged in Scotland, in 1815.
Plaque that reads "The Hanging Stanes - Thomas Kelly and Henry O'R Neil, the last two highwaymen in Scotland to be executed, were hanged in public on 25th January 1815, upon the gallows erected on the two stanes still visible on the spot, which was where the robbery took place." Two rectangular stones marking the spot where a gallows stood in 1815, now in the middle of a street.
