For Emil Nolde, his art considered 'degenerate' though it was, the discomfort he felt for appearing on this list was probably due to feeling betrayed by his beloved Nazi party.

I'm loving this series. Not only have I not read any of these so far, I haven't even heard of them. There's something entrancing about those books which at one time formed a sort of basic background in discourse, but whose assimilation becomes either so subtle or so absolute, that they're forgotten.
