Plant #4

Scientific name: Delosperma cooperi

A non-invasive iceplant? It exists! The California Invasive Plant Council considers this a non-invasive alternative to the harmful and highly aggressive Carpobrotus edulis. I planted it as groundcover for my “hellstrip”

Plant #16

Trying to get more consistent with this plant collection catalog project.

Pachira aquatica
“Money tree”

My number one houseplant recommendation for people who think they have a brown thumb. Easy to care for, quick growth, vertical interest. I also have a kokedama one.

Plant #15
Passiflora edulis ‘Frederick’

Common passionfruit. It took three years to flower, and this year, the fourth, I’m finally getting a substantial crop. I counted 50 fruits on my vine! I’ve heard there are tastier varieties out there. Anyone have experience?

Plant #14
Passiflora loefgrenii x caerulea

This ornamental passionflower is a beast and has completely covered a 20 foot fence I share with a neighbor. Not an edible fruit producing variety but the gulf fritillary loves it. 🦋

September is our warmest month and the pepper plants are beginning to set fruit en masse! Here’s a loaded habanero plant I grew from seed. #gardenshour #gardening

Plant #13 capsicum annuum

Restarting my catalog project for plants in my garden. This week for #gardenshour I’m featuring my Jimmy nardello peppers. 🌶️ They look spicy but have no heat and the 🐿️ leave them alone. My most productive pepper.

Really enjoying the cream variegation on these fish pepper 🌶️ plants. But will I enjoy the fruits too? #gardenshour 🌱 #gardening

#gardenshour is celebrating the color green this week and so I snapped this photo of my aeoniums this morning. Contrary to what I’ve read, mine prefer full shade in the summer. The ones in the sun crisp and lose much of their leaves!

Don’t have a lot of blue tones in the garden this time of year, the closest are the passionflowers. #gardenshour

Late for #gardenshour but the theme was before-and-after and I never need much reason to post a picture of my parking strip transformation. #gardening #landscaping 🌱

I never get tired of my cactus flowers. Does anyone know the name of this exact variety? Nursery label was generic. #gardening #gardeningfeed #cactus #flowers 🌱

Plant #12
California Poppy
Eschscholzia californica

Without fail, California poppies take over my parking strip/hellstrip every spring. It’s an explosion of color that brightens the entire city block and one of my biggest gardening joys every year.

Plant #11
Fire Stick
Euphorbia tirucalli

I have a few of these, all started as cuttings. If you are outside zones 9-11, you can grow it as a houseplant! More ☀️ = more red coloring. Warning: when cut, this plant does seep a toxic white sap. Wear gloves! 🧤

Plant #10
Cara Cara Orange 🍊

Citrus trees are everywhere in my climate but my trees STRUGGLE. I have these 4 fruit right now and it’s my first fruit in 3 years! I’ve honestly deluded myself into believing I grow citrus for the nice smell of orange blossoms. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I moved my cherry tree to my friends’ mountain house, so this half barrel needs a new plant! PlantSky, what do you recommend for a large container, zone10a, full sun?

Plant #9
Coleus

Usually grown as outdoor annuals, my oldest coleus are approaching two years old as indoor houseplants. The key is to pinch off the flowers so the plant doesn’t go to seed. Cuttings root easily and I’ve given multiple starts to friends.

Really wish I could drop Instagram but almost none of my gardening and non-gardening community has made the switch to here. I did delete Facebook and Threads though.

Plant #8
Common name: Dragon tree
Scientific name: Dracaena marginata

One of my earliest houseplant acquisitions. I miss my red accent wall that really made photos of my plants pop. Indirect light and a weekly watering is all this needs.

Plant #7
Common name: Tatsoi
Scientific name: Brassica rapa subsp. narinosa

I didn’t know about tatsoi until I started gardening. It’s not only the prettiest green you can grow, it tastes amazing too, like sweet buttery spinach. Here’s a pic of mine growing in a pot!

Plant #6
Common name: Heartleaf philodendron
Scientific name: Philodendron hederaceum

One of my oldest plants, you can see how small it was when I planted it in a mug I drilled a drainage hole into. Recent photo to the right. Low-maintenance and a common houseplant for a reason.

Plant #5

Scientific name: Schlumbergera

When the days are shortest, my Christmas cacti start to bloom. I keep these in indirect filtered light/bright shade (not an oxymoron😅) and they are perfectly happy. Low maintenance and a great choice for indoor flowers.

Plant #3

Common name: Fiddle-leaf fig
Scientific name: Ficus lyrata

Super trendy, I’ve seen so many people buy these for aesthetics only to see them get sad looking. This is NOT a good plant for beginners. I’ve been lucky w/weekly watering and bright indirect sun.

Plant #2

One of the first non-succulent perennials I got was a delphinium. I love purple flowers and plants that add verticality to the garden. They come back reliably year after year and do great in large containers.

Scientific name: Delphinium elatum

This is the first in my plant catalog series.

Gifted by a friend in 2015, it’s the plant I’ve had longest. I got a second one as it’s the only way I can display pumpkins and prevent squirrels from stealing them.

Scientific name: Echinocactus
Common name: Barrel cactus
