It varies wildly depending on state standards. When I attended high school in Texas and South Dakota, the civics education we received was bundled into a US government class and not a separate course. The effectiveness of instruction is usually a function of the funding a school district receives.

After years of people accusing Google of just following Apple's lead in mobile OS/hardware design, it's funny to see the reverse happening.

I do think Google's execution is a little more elegant, though.
