To be fair I think we had some major screw ups in messaging and focus in the past that have haunted us. Defund the police for example (I broadly support the movement but the name was atrocious and non-sensical).

But I think we're doing a good job with better messaging and focus.

The protocol it's built on is inherently more free.

Also it's open source.

I don't disagree that free speech matters. Back in the 2010s I disliked the banning of accounts on social media. However I vehemently disagree with the idea that free speech means inescapable speech.

Twitter is massive.

In other words: I think there is absolutely nothing wrong with moderation on social media sites like BlueSky. I don't view moderation here as heavy handed, but, even if it was, that would be fine.

We have our "free speech" platforms already. If you have something being "censored" you can go there

Agree. We all deserve multiple spaces.

There are enough "free speech" social media spaces now that there is nothing wrong, at all, with implementing moderation and selective engagement.

We have the public square where morons can be morons and we have our house where morons cannot be morons.

I mean I'm pretty happy. I have everything I want in life and enough education + income to automate what I don't like. That and dual citizenship!

I just feel bad for people who will suffer. But it is what it is.

but I am having a good time :D

Oof. Had to report you :(

Best wishes in the future, just not on here.

That and there are plenty of platforms available, now, with great public access, where you can say almost anything you want. Including Twitter.

So it's not like being banned from BlueSky is the end of your ability to join public conversation at large online...

You can go to twitter and post whatever toxic sludge you want. Nobody is stopping you from speaking. You just want to force your toxic sludge into our moderated spaces.

Back in 2018 I would agree that free speech was "under attack" in-so-far as most platforms had substantial moderation Now? No.
November 20, 2024 at 5:07 PM
Why should I be unable to have moderation?

If I want a cesspool where anybody can talk and spew toxic waste, including bots, I go to twitter with its shit algorithm.

I don't want that. It's a waste of my time. I have the right to enjoy platforms where modicums of decorum are expected.

Agreed. So sick of 24/7 fear, anger -- just general emotion.

It's really weird how spaces like this can still exist.
