For years they've scoffed at being called fascists and then immediately start talking about forcefully taking over various friendly nations.

People are incentivized to criticize, but those who think, "That was unfortunate, but she apologized," often stay silent. They fear backlash or simply because negativity tends to dominate. Just like reviews—people are more likely to post bad ones. The same trend applies in online discussions imo.
